Fire and Gas Detector Mapping

Fire and Gas detection system is a subset of industrial automation and control system that is used in the process industries for the purpose of detecting loss of containment of hazardous materials from the process and initiating a response to mitigate the release impact. Loss of containment can be a small leak, medium leak or even a catastrophic release. Those leaks can be detected by measuring the presence of the released materials (e.g., gas concentration) or inferred from the effects of the release (e.g., thermal radiation from a fire).

Actions taken by the Fire and Gas detection system can be manually or automatically initiated and can affect a wide variety of systems, such as sheltering in place or evacuation in response to audible and visual alarm indications; water deluge; fire suppressant initiation; manipulation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system equipment; process isolation; or process depressurization. Similar to detection capability, the effectiveness of these mitigative actions is highly scenario dependent.

Determining the target performance of an FGS function should be accomplished using hazard and risk analysis. Techniques used to select target FGS performance considers parameters that affect the hazard and risk. They are often applied on an equipment-item basis to determine if an FGS should be considered to protect each equipment item and, if protection is required, what degree of performance should be targeted in the design. To reach specified performance target coverage, a number of detectors are proposed. However, without carefully studied, it will come with a huge number of detectors. In order to give an optimized-minimum number of detectors, an optimization is performed. Dome experts can help to obtain a minimum and optimised number of detectors by placing the detectors in most effective locations, elevation, and orientation. 3-D detector mapping model is adopted to undertake the Fire and Gas Mapping and Performance Target study.
